Klimaatverandering zal waarschijnlijk leiden tot meer aardbevingen – en vulkaanuitbarstingen. De Britse hoogleraar geologie Bill McGuire stelde dit vast in 2013.

Door de hogere temperaturen smelten de ijskappen namelijk, waardoor de zeespiegel stijgt. Dat verandert de verdeling van het gewicht op de aardkorst, waardoor de platen in het zachte binnenste van de aarde op sommige plekken zinken en op andere stijgen. En dat kan aardbevingen opwekken.

De situatie is het ernstigst in de valleien van Orco, Soana en Lanzo. Beken stromen over en in afgelegen steden zijn waarschuwingen afgegeven.
